Believe it or not, swimming during the Winter is actually favoured by many and is, in fact, a regular hobby. For others, this may seem like the last thing you’d want to be doing in such cold climates, and if you’re one of these people, we’re here to change your mind.

Here are just a few of the benefits that come with cold-water swimming…

No.1 – Bigger, Better Waves

If you’re more of an ocean swimmer, did you know the waves are substantially bigger in the Winter?

In fact, waves are at their best from December to March!

Not only does this pose great fun for a day’s swimming but is also great for experienced surfers too who are looking to ride the waves during a quieter beach period in the year.

However, it’s extremely important that you stay safe during the Winter. These waves can get pretty rough and you mustn’t go in the sea if it doesn’t seem safe.

No. 2 – It Burns Calories!

All exercise is known to burn calories but cold-water swimming is even more effective at this.

Why? Your body is constantly working hard to warm itself up when exposed to cold conditions, in effect, burning more calories than usual.

No. 3 – Boosts your Immune System

Swimming in cold or ice water boosts your immune system massively!

Again, this is all due to your body reacting to the extreme temperature change.

Your body in return inherits more white blood cells and becomes even better at defending when encountering foreign bodies.

No. 4 – Improves your Mental Health

We’ve all heard that generally, exercise boosts your mood and makes you feel a lot more positive, but how can swimming in the Winter play such a key role in improving your mental health?

It increases your endorphins and positive hormones in the brain, making you feel much calmer and relaxed.

If you suffer from depression or anxiety, cold-water swimming could be a great escape.

No. 5 – Reduces Inflammation

The sudden change in temperature results in your body directing blood away from your muscles, into the core, to protect all your major organs. This gives your muscles time to recover.

This may sound familiar as you’ve probably heard that athletes take ice baths, and this is why.

No. 6 – Vitamins and Minerals

Seawater in particular contains plenty of vitamins and minerals that are great for the skin.

Magnesium, potassium, and calcium are just a few of these and they contribute to a much more radiant complexion.

Seawater can also cause damaged skin to heal much quicker too.

We hope these benefits have encouraged you to try out cold water swimming this Winter.

No. 7 – Making new friends and Socialising
