We want to make sure you stay safe and warm on your next adventure to make the most out of the clear and cold days. As we come to the end of Autumn and to the start of Winter, the weather is cold and frequently treacherous. Only experienced paddlers who know rescue and roll techniques should go out in the winter. It is essential to know the conditions before you go. As long as you plan a reasonable route, pack the right gear and dress appropriately, the weather won’t get in your way (too much!).

Think ahead
Choose a route you know and one with plenty of safe landing options. Make sure you analyse the weather and wind forecasts carefully. Remember, this definitely isn’t a time to challenge yourself in big water.

Be prepared for cold weather and dress appropriately
It does sound pretty obvious, but when the winter sun is shining on your back, it is easy to forget how cold that water really is. Prepare for getting wet even if you have no intention on falling in. Dressing appropriately is vital for winter kayaking, think about what will be most suitable and take layers if you think you might need them. It is always easier to cool down than it is to warm up. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

Wear a buoyancy aid
Not only does a buoyancy aid help you float if you fall into the water, but it also comes in handy as an extra layer to keep you even toastier both in and out of the water. It should be a staple of every paddler’s wardrobe.

Think about food and drink
This will depend on the type of session you have planned, if you’re only going to be on the water for an hour then perhaps a hot drink in a flask will suffice. If however, you have planned an amazing challenge then you may want to think about food and drink a bit more carefully. Flasks, energy bars, meals and snacks all need to be considered, staying fed and watered can help you stay warmer for longer.

Stay hydrated
You might be surrounded by water, but you need to drink plenty of it too! Even though it isn’t hot outside, your body will still lose water during exercise so it is important to take enough water for your session. Consider a hydration pack so you can drink on the move.

Enjoy yourself!
The most important point of all is to enjoy yourself! There are many ways you can mix up your winter paddling and try something new, including:

  • Browse the internet for a new kayak or canoe
  • Try a new challenging route
  • Finding social paddles and events
  • Joining a club
