No need to wait for the sun to come out to get in the water. If you’re new to the world of water sports, you’re yet to find that winter can be the best time to head out with your board or kayak and we’re here to share our top tips!

Grab your wetsuit, and a flask of hot tea or coffee and get ready!

Being Safe in the Water

First thing’s first is safety. The waves are bigger this time of year, which is fun but can be dangerous without the right safety precautions.

Invest in a PFD

The water is going to be very cold, and it can be a struggle to get back on your board or in your kayak or whatever it might be if you fall in. Because of this, wearing a PFD (personal floatation device) of some kind is recommended to keep you afloat.

It’s important to know that there is a difference between a PFD and a life jacket. A PFD will keep you afloat but doesn’t have the same buoyancy as a life jacket which will rotate you and keep you above water if you were to become unconscious.

Supplies

The nights draw in much earlier at this time of year, so if you’re going out later in the afternoon or the evening, taking a head torch will be helpful, especially if it’s waterproof and you can take it in the water with you. Our waterproof dry bags are perfect for carrying supplies like this around with you.

Don’t go too far out at Sea

And, last but not least, especially if you’re surfing, make sure that you don’t go too far out, especially if you’re not a very confident surfer or swimmer. The waves can be extremely rough, so be cautious when going in the sea if this is the case, or take someone with you.

Check the Weather Beforehand

The weather forecast changes all the time, so it’s best to check the forecast again just before you head out to check the weather predictions still stand.

What should you check?

  • Wind speed
  • Tide times
  • Sunset
  • Water temperature

Have you got Winter-Worthy Clothing & Kit?

A wetsuit is a must, but there are lots of other bits and pieces that will make life ten times easier (and warmer) that are worth preparing.

  • Wetsuit – must we say more?
  • Neoprene or thermal gloves – perfect for any type of paddling or just keeping warm
  • Neoprene shoes – not only will these keep your feet warm in the sea, but they’ll also add a little bit of protection if you’re in shallow waters or walking
  • A dry bag – now we might be biased, but wouldn’t you be if you didn’t have to carry all of your stuff with you and worry about it getting wet? These are perfect for all-year-round sporting.
  • Drying robe – as soon as you get out of the water, if you put a drying robe on, it’ll instantly make you feel warm and cosy before you get changed into clothes.

When you look at it, water sports in the winter can actually be a lot more fun (when you’re prepared and have all the right kit).
