From the biggest waves ever surfed to the record for the longest ride, don’t miss out on some of the World’s most amazing surfing facts below…

World’s Biggest Wave

Did you know that the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman was a staggering 73.5ft? This took place in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal.

It was ridden by Maya Gabeira who actually broke her own Guinness World record which was originally 68ft back in 2018.

The biggest wave surfed by man was a whopping 80ft, surfed by Rodrigo Koxa also in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal.

First-Ever Wave Surfed

The first evidence of a wave being surfed took place back in the 12th Century in Polynesia. Numerous cave paintings have been found of the Polynesians that show this.

It’s been said that the residents of Polynesia are who brought the sport to Hawaii, and are the reason it’s still so popular there today.

Longest Wave Ride

The longest ever wave ride stands at a huge 3 hours and 55 minutes by Gary Saavedra in 2011, as he crossed the Panama Canal.

Gary surfed the wake of a speed boat for this length of time and covered a total of 41.3 miles.

Top Surfing Tricks

Backside Air Reverse

The classic move that we’ve all seen in all the cool surfing films is the backside air reverse where the rider completes a 360° manoeuvre in the air before landing back on the wave.

It’s considered one of the more advanced tricks to do in the sport.

Rodeo Flip

This is where the surfer performs an upside-down flip and then lands back on their feet on their board.

The Rodeo Flip is another more advanced trick.

Bottom Turn

One of the most important moves in surfing. This involves turning the board 180° at the bottom of the wave in order to go back up the wave face.

Bend your knees, stay low, and twist your board’s direction while keeping a good speed.

This is one of the foundation tricks before moving onto the more advanced.
