You’re right that there’s nothing better than surfing in the sun or quietly canoeing in the toasty warm weather, but that’s not to say that Winter is a total write-off when it comes to aqua sporting.

We’ve put together an up-to-date list of some of our favourites for you to try over the Winter months, or when holidaying to much colder countries.

Surfing

In the winter, the waves are sharper which calls for a much more proactive surfing experience!

The waves are 10X more powerful than the rest of the year due to larger groundswells and the cold climate leads to a much more consistent surf, so you’re not stood around waiting for a half-decent wave.

With the appropriate wetsuits and thermal gear, Winter surfing really is the ice-ing on top of the cake (see what we did there)!

You’ll also have noticed that the crowds are down to a minimum, so you can have the waves all to yourself!

However, remember that the lack of visitors and lifeguards makes it much riskier if you’re not as experienced in the sport, so stay safe when in the water!

Ice Diving

Could you handle the challenge of ice diving?

This comes with so many physical and mental health benefits, such as the following…

  • Improved circulation
  • Boosting your mood
  • Increasing your immune system
  • Reducing stress

Again, whilst this is extremely beneficial, make sure you ease yourself into the sport for safety reasons.

Coldwater swimming could be a great place to start off if you haven’t already. You can read more about this sport in our blog, here.

Snow Kiting

Extremely similar to the concept of snowboarding, snowkiting involves taking to the slopes with your snowboarding gear…oh, and a kite!

When the wind is strong enough, this can even be done on a flat, snowy surface if this is easier to find.

This is a hugely popular sport in countries like Switzerland, Norway and Austria.
